The Solo Carry-On List for Mexico & CentAm

One bag, two climates, zero porters. A carry-on packing list for women travelling solo from Caribbean coast to highland towns.

Travelling alone means you are the porter. Every cobbled street, bus step and boat jetty is easier with one bag you can lift overhead yourself. The challenge in this region is climate range: humid Caribbean coast one week, highland towns where nights drop to single digits Celsius the next. This list is built for both.

The bag

  • A carry-on roller or a 35 to 40 litre backpack. Backpacks are easier on cobbles and boats; rollers are easier on your back in airports. Choose for your route.
  • A small crossbody bag with a zip that sits in front of you.
  • A packable day bag for hikes and beaches.

Solo-specific essentials

  • A rubber door wedge for extra peace of mind in rooms.
  • A power bank and a short cable in your crossbody bag.
  • A spare card stored separately from your main wallet.
  • Paper copies of your passport and insurance policy.
  • A whistle or small personal alarm if it makes you feel more at ease.
  • A headlamp for power cuts and early boats.

Health kit

  • Your prescription medicine in original packaging, plus a copy of the prescription.
  • Oral rehydration salts.
  • Biodegradable sunscreen; some cenotes and lagoons require it or ask you to shower first.
  • Insect repellent: dengue is present in parts of the region. Check current health advice from official sources.

Tech

  • An eSIM or local SIM; Telcel coverage is broad in Mexico, Tigo and Claro in much of Central America.
  • Offline maps of every town you will visit.
  • A universal adapter is rarely needed for North American plugs in Mexico; check by country.

Gear estimates

Price estimates, not quotes. Figures marked "est." are planning ranges checked in October 2026 from public listings and operator sites. They move with season, exchange rates and demand, so confirm before you book.

  • Quality carry-on roller: est. $150 to $350
  • Anti-theft crossbody bag: est. $35 to $90
  • Light down jacket: est. $70 to $200
  • Rubber door wedge: est. $8 to $15

If your bags do get delayed on arrival, good insurance with baggage cover makes the first days far easier. Compare policies before you fly. Check carry-on friendly fares and the baggage rules for your airline, which vary widely on budget carriers.
